In another new initiative the General Committee, under the sanctioning of the Motor Sports Council, recently announced the creation of an all-new racing series named Roadsports.
This series is aimed directly at the people who have always perceived racing as, in the words of our President, "a rich man's" sport and because of this perception thought they couldn't afford it. The series is designed as a low cost starter series, especially for young people, to introduce them to motorsport as a hobby and a possibly lucrative career.
The President explained the project as "The idea is for an affordable road car based race series to act as a first rung of the ladder to young men and women who desire a possible career in motor racing. As the value of second hand cars in Hong Kong is low for a car that is only a few years old, as an example MX5's can be had for less than $20,000, a tightly controlled formula, to stop people winning by money, has been devised. We set a target that for less than $50,000 a young person could go competitive motor racing - including buying the car, the necessary safety equipment, both for the vehicle and the driver, entry fees for a 6 race series and transport of the vehicle to the ZIC circuit and back to Hong Kong. Obviously in subsequent years the costs would be even less if they chose not to progress."
For the first year the series will run from June to August with three weekends of two races per weekend. Eligible vehicles are any road going, open, two seater car, any closed, two door, saloon car of not more than four seats and any car complying with existing HKAA MSC affiliated club rules.
The classes are on a power to weight basis, with a driver's experience being taken into account also by the eligibility scrutineer, to ensure that everyone has a competitive class to race in.
