In the 1950s, the Association started its involvement in motorsport activities. Hong Kong competitors are amongst the most active in Asia, entering events as far flung as India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Macau, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The disciplines pursued cover car racing, motorcycle racing, motocross and rallying.

In the early 1980s the Association organized two international motocross meetings in Hong Kong, with competitors from China, Japan, America and Europe. This early sporting contact with the China Motor Sport Association led to the jointly organized three extremely successful rallies from Hong Kong to Beijing from 1985 to 1987. The event was re-established from 1993 to 1997.

In March, 1993, the Association organized the first race meeting in China, in the city of Zhu Hai in Guangdong Province. This was a street race on a closed circuit and it was very successful, There was a great deal of media interest and, conservatively, 600 million people saw the event on television worldwide.

The Association organized its first international race meeting at Shah Alam in Malaysia in June 1993. This has grown out for the experience gained in organizing five Hong Kong National Race Meetings at the Bira Circuit in Thailand, since 1988, and the very high demand from Hong Kong competitors. Subsequently the Association changed its name to Hongkong Touring Car Championship ( HTCC ).
